What is a domain name?

A domain name (also known as a Domain) is like an address on a street used to represent a house or business on the internet. It helps you easily identify a specific website with a unique name and direct visitors to it, with each domain name in this letter format corresponding to a numerical IP address.

There are currently millions of domain names existing on the world wide web. To own a domain name, you need to pay an annual fee to maintain the right to use that domain name. Before registering a domain name, you need to check the availability of the domain name to ensure that the domain name you want to register is not already owned by someone else.

The importance of domains:

Domains are of great importance for presence and activity on the internet. They play a significant role in helping businesses identify, establish identity, and build an online brand. Additionally, they are crucial for creating trust, marketing, and interacting with customers online.

What are domains used for?

Domains are used to identify an entity on the internet. They are a unique address for a website, application, or online service that allows users to access it. As such, domains are also a way for you to access a specific website to explore the content within.

Domains are also used to create custom email addresses.

One further use of domains is to contribute significantly to brand building. Choosing a memorable domain name that is closely related to the business activities will help create recognition for your company or organization. In addition, domains can be used to store and share files through the FTP protocol, used to create advertising websites or landing pages to market products, services, or events.

The structure of Domain

You have just learned the full concept of Domain Name, so what are the components that make up a Domain Name?

The complete structure of a domain consists of three parts. It starts with the hostname/server name (such as www). Next is the website name and finally the TLD (Top Level Domain) (for example, the .com, .net part). The three parts of the domain are separated by dots.

In my website’s case, the Domain Name is “azcosmos”. Note that the domain is not the same as the URL. Because the URL is a complete address of the website, and it contains both the domain and other information.

How does a domain name work?

A domain name is a “shortcut” that leads to the server hosting a website. A domain name acts as an address for people to find your website on the internet. Domain names work based on the Domain Name System (DNS) to connect domain names with the IP address of the server on the internet.

After being registered, the domain name owner will configure DNS records for it. When someone queries a domain name in a browser, the browser will send a request to resolve the domain name to the DNS server. The server will receive the request, resolve and search for the corresponding IP address of the domain name in the DNS database, and respond back to the browser to display the website content on the screen for the user.

Domain Classification

Top Level Domain (TLD)

Top level domain is the extension that comes after the last dot of a domain. TLD represents the highest level in the domain name hierarchy system. Some TLDs have specific standards for identifying and classifying domains. For example:

.gov – used for government websites.

.com – used for commercial business websites (company).

.edu – used for educational organizations.

.org – used for non-profit organizations.

.mil – used for military websites.

What you need to know about a Domain Name

A Domain Name is equivalent to your website address.

A Domain Name consists of 2 parts: Website name.

For example: azcosmos

Extension.

For example: .com (short for commercial, the most popular domain name type) or .net (short for network, commonly used for Internet service providers)

Domain name registration is licensed and monitored by ICANN – managing all international domain names in the world.

Domain Names work by forwarding customers to the appropriate Web Server.

tenmien.com is considered the most popular syntax. Up to 46.5% of websites use this Domain Name.

ccTLD – Country Code Top-level domain. National domains use country codes and specify geographical areas.

For example:

.cn is the national domain name for websites in China

.es is the national domain name of Spain

.vn is the national domain name of Vietnam

gTLD – Generic Top-level Domain (the highest level domain name with over 700 extensions) tends to be designed specifically for certain objects (e.g. .org for organizations).

Each domain name has a different registration process. You can use search tools to find available domain names.

Domain names can be transferred from one provider to another.

The Web Server (of the hosting service provider) is where all the content and data of your website are stored.

Guide to registering a domain

Step 1. Choose a domain registrar: Find a reliable and suitable domain registrar for your needs.

Step 2. Check domain availability: Enter the domain you want to register to check if it is available or already registered by someone else.

Step 3. Register and purchase the domain: After selecting the desired domain name, choose the TLD and registration period (usually around 1 year or longer).

Step 4. Payment: Once you have found a suitable domain registrar and selected the domain according to your needs, simply make the payment to complete the registration process.

Essential requirements when registering a domain

When registering a domain, the registrant needs to provide some information including:
